A Short History Of Hawaii Islands - It Is Important To Understand Their Culture
Hawaii is often judged by the pictures which the majority of us are familiar with; however a brief history of Hawaii will soon show you that there is a lot more to this group of islands than meets the eye.

A brief history of Hawaii will present that the first settlers in the Hawaiian islands were the Polynesians. They were followed by Tahitians who enforced the Polynesians inland. The Tahitians created the first big cultural revolution for Hawaii. When they came they brought with them Gods and Demi Gods who they worshiped. In addition they created a system kapu system which was their initial forms of laws.

A hierarchy was developed across the islands were by the areas were claimed as kingdoms and were then run independently. These kingdoms were divided more into places run by the chiefs. There was a strong social structure and there were kapu or taboos which guided the commoners through almost every aspect of their lives.

The chiefs were sometimes warring with their neighbors and it had become the rule. This way of life continued until the late 18th century. In 1791 the large island of Hawaii was united under one king. This was the most radical change in the history of Hawaii so far. Kahala went on to unite the whole of the Hawaiian islands by 1810.

On the death of Kahala his son took over and he removed the practice of Taboos that made way for the new religious beliefs that were being presented by the Christian missionaries.

The missionaries had started to arrive soon after Captain Cook had arrived on the Hawaiian islands and had opened them up to the Europeans and the Americans.

The missionaries brought not just a new religious conviction, but also a western treatments & concepts. Over time the culture of Hawaii was changed and in 1840 the monarchy further lost control when Hawaii ceased to be an absolute monarchy and government branches were formed.

Once there was a government in place the financial system became increasingly more dependent on Western trade and the reasonable step was to become a territory of the USA. This was achieved in 1898, however, full statehood was not achieved until 1959.

It only takes a brief history of Hawaii to under stand why their traditions have become so crucial. This little group of islands got very close to losing their identity, that now they hold on and celebrate their individuality.
