Perinatal Environment and Autism.Autism is associated with some perinatal and obstetric conditions.
A 2007 review of risk factors found associated obstetric conditions that included low birth weight and gestation
duration, and hypoxia during childbirth. This association does not demonstrate a causal relationship; an underlying
cause could explain both autism and these associated conditions.
A 2007 study of premature infants found that those who survived cerebellar hemorrhagic injury (bleeding in the
brain that injures the cerebellum) were significantly more likely to show symptoms of autism than controls without
the injury.
There are different opinions about the possible effects of a laborious delivery. In recent years opinions tend to
suppose that laborious pregnancies are a consequence of autism in the child rather than the cause of it. After all,
if heredity plays a role then autism comes into the picture at conception and symptoms may reveal themselves at
pregnancy and birth.
Birth demands a lot of every baby. A baby suddenly has to breathe on its own. This requires great adaptation and
gearing, the very thing that causes a lot of trouble in babies with a disorder in the autism spectrum. Hence
problems can be indicated around the birth.
