What are the general symptoms of Autism?
All children with ASD demonstrate deficits in:
1.social interaction,
2.verbal and nonverbal communication, and
3.repetitive behaviors or interests.
Social interaction means autistics generally have difficulty expressing emotions, exhibitingempathy, and
conversing with others.

Verbal and nonverbal communication has to do with both speaking and non-verbalcommunication, such as eye contact,
facial expression, body language, etc.
Repetition of certain phrases or strings of numbers characterize repetitive behaviors or interests. They may
insist on following certain routines, playing in a repetitive fashion, or rigid organizationof objects.
Thus PDDs are made of a triad of impairments. Each of these features can be represented on acontinuum of
severity.
In addition to the ones already mentioned, they will often have unusual responses to sensoryexperiences, such as
certain sounds or the way objects look.
Each of these symptoms runs the gamut from mild to severe. They will present themselves in eachindividual child
differently. For instance, a child may have little trouble learning to read but clearlyexhibit extremely poor
social interaction. Each child will display communication, social, andbehavioral patterns that are individual but
fit into the overall diagnosis of ASD.
